Once he moved to the Unites States at age eighteen, he realized that African-Americans are not treated the same everywhere. For instance, Edward Jekyll encouraged McKay to explore his native dialect and to write poetry about the world he lives in (Cagan). Hearing the blacks complain about earning a living inspired McKay and that is what his most well known poetry and novels were about, such as Home to Harlem. Another person McKay met was Sinclair Lewis. Lewis gave him â€Å"a few cardinal and practical points about the writing of a book of novel† that McKay says he â€Å"did not forget when I got to writing Home to Harlem†(Grant). McKay became first of many writers who voiced the opinion of the suppressed black people through literature that led him to success. The main ideals of this poet were to raise social conflicts and to inspire his people. In 1917 his first New York publication was in The Seven Arts magazine that published The Harlem Dancer and Invocation (â€Å"Festus †). After these poems were published many were to follow. Another well-known poem by McKay is â€Å"If We Must Die. † In this poem, McKay expresses both love for America and hate for racism. McKay is credited with having inspired the Renaissance with the poem when the nation was gripped with red scare and race riots (Cagan). â€Å"If We Must Die† won him great popularity because it powerfully evoked the mood of African American communities during the time period. McKay published Home to Harlem in 1928, which provides a detailed portrayal of the underside of black urban life, especially with its prostitutes and gamblers. Home to Harlem gained recognition as the first commercially successful novel by a black writer (Grant). McKay continued to write poetry, short stories, and novels that revealed that expressed the moods of blacks’ desperation and defiance that is what he soon became known for. McKay attempted through his career to resolve the complexities surrounding the black man’s contradictory situation. McKay says, â€Å"Color-consciousness was the fundamental of my restlessness. Through time, McKay became known as the fieriest and the most determined black poet. David Goldweber describes McKay as â€Å"steadfast† and â€Å"resolute† (Goldweber). As a writer, McKay never wandered from his attempt to equalize white and black. McKay’s work had a type of musical dialect that emphasized the sharp anger of its subject- racism. Goldweber explains that McKay’s work â€Å"lacked the jazzy inventiveness of Hughes and the stately craftsmanship of Cullen, but it compensated through the sheer force of its honesty and bluntness† (Goldweber). McKay continued to express his opinions through aggression and hostility in his writings. In â€Å"Harlem Shadows†, Goldweber clarifies that McKay showed â€Å"belligerence, sorrow, and hatred† for Western civilization, and rage against separation towards the black community. McKay made it known that he could not shake the sense of something unequalled working in and through human life. Claude McKay became a remarkable poet, novelist, and American Literature writer who was inspired by the society and influential figures that came into his life. Each one of these experiences had a polarity of sorts paired along with it in some way. Oedipus intellect throughout the play showed both his great strength and his ultimate downfall. Throughout the play of Oedipus the King by Sophocles, there was evidence of great polarities in his search for truth ranging from fame and shame, and sight and blindness, to ignorance and knowledge. The most dreadful of the situations was when Oedipus great fame turned bruptly into shame upon himself and his kingdom. His fame cane from him relieving the city of Thebes of the plague that so long hindered them by the Sphinx. Once Oedipus solved the Sphinxs riddle, leading her to her ultimate suicide, he received the crown due to his heroic deed. The whole kingdom adored him and would be revolted when they found out the truth. This came about when it was realized that Oedipus prophecy that he left Corinth to escape, actually came true. The fact that he killed his birth father and married his mother brought him great shame. With this shame came other things. Although Oedipus could physically see, he was blinded by the fact that he did not know the dark truth that was hovering around him. When his sight was given to him, he did not know how to react, and therefore literally took it away from himself. The shame was too great for him to endure so by voluntarily blinding himself, he thought that would be a sufficient punishment. Oedipus was unaware of his reality so when this dreadful news was brought to his attention, he needed some way to aid his grief and did so in an unruly manner. Oedipus ignorance came directly from the fact that he had no truthful knowledge of who he really was. He had left Corinth to escape the chance of letting the prophecy come true, but unbeknownst to him, it would come true because of his departure. The previous knowledge that Oedipus believed about him being from Corinth allowed him to prosper and become a highly respectable king. This ignorance that he possessed was the cause of all of the cumbersome problems he endured throughout the play. Oedipus reliance of his intellect both aided him and ultimately led him to is downfall. If all else were void, the intellect that Oedipus withheld allowed him to be a beloved king adored by the people of Thebes. After all, his intellect was the tool that allowed him to relieve the city of Thebes from the plague. When everyone actually became aware of the truth, Oedipus could not fathom his newfound intellect and performed and act of self-mutilation. It led to his wife (and mother) killing herself, him being exiled from Thebes never to see him children again, and having to give up his crown to someone who did not want the responsibility of a king. These great polarities that Oedipus faced on his Journey for the truth showed the fast opposites he endured during the various experiences. Usually had times help shape a persons character but these hard times were too much for anyone to handle. Although he was an extremely respectable leader, in the end the negatives outweighed all of the positives presented by Oedipus. When all of the puzzles pieces onto his family and kingdom. According to Magnuson (1997) the definition adopted by the United States government a food additive is "any substance the intended use of which results or may reasonably be expected to result directly or indirectly in its becoming a component or otherwise affecting the characteristics of any food." According to this definition any substance that is used in the process of preserving, packaging, storing, treatment and transportation are referred to as food additives. Additives are divided into two categories, direct and indirect. Direct additives are the ones that are added to the food for some particular purpose. Indirect additives are the ones that become part of food during processing, packaging and storing. In that case sodium sulfite comes in the category of direct additives since it is purposely added to the food for preservation and preventing discoloration. According to the Magnuson (1997) additives are used in food for five main purposes. They are for maintaining product consistency, to increase or preserve nutritional value, to preserve palatability and wholesomeness, to provide alkalinity and to improve the flavor or preserving color. Sodium Sulfite is added to the foods as an antioxidant for preservation and preventing discoloration. It acts as an antimicrobial agent in wine making since it does not disturb the development of yeast and inhibits bacterial growth. Its concentration in finished wine is calculated to be up till 6mmol/L (Mitsuhashi et al, 2001). There are certain rules and regulations related to the use of sulfites in food. FDA has disallowed the use of sulfites in foods that are rich in thiamin, for example enriched flour since it destroys the thiamin. In general majority of the people have no problem with the normal consumption of sulfite.
